Priory Sacred Art Guild

Sacred Art Classes

As Pope Leo defines it:

“Art is a creative process through which human beings, in imitation of God’s work, shape matter and imbue it with a transcendent meaning.”

In our workshops, participants take raw matter, whether pigment and egg yolk, glass and lead, or ink and gold, and shape it into a work that proclaims the glory of God through beauty.

Students are encouraged to see art not as an original work done for the glory of the artist, but as an artifact made in prayerful contemplation for the glory of God. Pope Leo also reminds us:

“The Church, as a pilgrim through time, has understood art precisely in this way: not as mere aestheticism, but as a means of proclaiming the Gospel through beauty.”

With this view of art in mind, our growing community of professional sacred artists offers their time-honed skill and expertise in a variety of workshops.

Pray with Us

In addition to taking classes, all participants are invited to pray with the monks Monday through Saturday and to attend Mass before class on Sunday. The church itself is a work of art, designed by the renowned architect Gyo Obata of HOK, and provides a contemplative space for worship.

Just as the monks take part in the art classes, they love it when fellow students join them in prayer on campus.

The setting of the classes, among Priory’s rolling hills, ponds, and forests, reminds students that sacred art springs not only from human hands but from the splendor of God’s creation.
