Sacred Art Institute at Saint Louis Abbey

Priory Sacred Art Guild

In keeping with the Benedictine motto Ora et Labora (Pray and Work), Saint Louis Abbey’s Sacred Art Guild invites artists of all skill levels, from the absolute novice to the expert, to encounter God through the beauty of creation.

At the Guild, monks, artists, and the wider community labor together in sacred art classes, including calligraphy, illumination, stained glass, mosaic, iconography, and more, in a prayerful, contemplative practice that opens a path to deeper communion with God and one another.

Our Heritage

A long tradition of sacred art at Priory

The monks at Priory have a long-standing tradition of engagement with the arts, and the Guild itself draws on the Guild of St. Columcille, begun at the St. Louis Priory School by the late Brother Symeon Gillette, O.S.B.

Brother Symeon’s stained glass windows, mosaics, and icons, as well as the many trees and gardens he planted on campus, reflect the deep appreciation for and support of the arts present at Priory since its founding in 1955.

Within the rhythm of the abbey

All classes at the Priory Sacred Art Guild seek to draw students, artists, and monks alike into the daily rhythm of our abbey, where time moves to the beat of prayer and work. Join us!
